Bull Tahr

Big Game Hunting In New Zealand

Introduced to New Zealand in 1904, tahr are this country's premier alpine trophy. Found only in the South Island bull tahr provide the ultimate challenge to the free range hunter. There is no greater sight than a mature bull, silhouetted on a rocky ridge with mane whipping around in the breeze. Awesome. Recommended outfitters: Brendon Matthews: James Gray.

Fallow Buck

Introduced to New Zealand in 1864 the fallow deer is another great deer introduction. It is found in both islands and provides excellent trophies. New Zealand has several colour phases with the most sought after being the "New Zealand black". This might have something to do with it being the dominant colour amongst the long established wild herds.                         Recommended outfitter: Brendon Matthews.

Red Stag

Introduced to New Zealand in 1854 the red deer quickly established itself as the country's most successful introduction ever. The quality genetics and predator free   environment have consistently produced massive trophy heads.  New Zealand has arguably the largest in the world. Buck Chamois

Introduced to New Zealand in 1907 the Chamois is a true mountain antelope. The buck is affectionally called the pretty boy of the alps and lives in steep and challenging terrain. He is only found in the South Island.

Wild Ram

New Zealand is an agricultural country and at one time boasted a sheep population of over 70 million animals.

Wild Boar

Captain Cook released pigs for food in the late 18th century and numbers proliferated.

They are a common quarry throughout New Zealand.

The wild goat was introduced to New Zealand in the late 18th century and is in high numbers throughout both islands.

Several of the billy goats produce massive trophy heads.

Sika Stag

 

Introduced to New Zealand in 1905 the Sika is another introduction success.

 It is only found in the North Island but in high numbers.
