South Island |
Big Game Hunting In New Zealand The largest island is the South Island, called the mainland locally. Wild populations of Himalayan tahr, chamois, red deer, fallow deer, wapiti, Virginian deer (whitetail), wild ram, wild boar, wild goat and wallaby occur here. Another population of whitetail and red deer exists just south on Stewart Island. Brendon Matthews and James Gray are both based in the South Island. |

| North Island |
This Island has no wild populations of tahr, chamois, wapiti, or whitetail, but has sika, sambar, and rusa in addition to the other species. The main animals hunted on estates are red deer, wapiti, fallow deer, tahr within zone, (South Island) sika, rusa (North Island), whitetail (South Island) wild ram, boar and wild goat.Glenn Martin and John Ham are based in the North Island. |

| Free Range |
From a free- range perspective the main target animals are tahr, chamois, red deer, fallow deer, sika, wild ram, wild boar, and wild goat. The tahr, chamois, sika, ram, and goat trophies are world class while red deer and fallow deer can occasionally produce big heads. James Gray is a South Island free range guiding specialist, while Glenn Martin and John Ham have an excellent free range North Island red stag block. |

New Zealand consists of three main islands with 12 huntable species. Wallaby count as 13. Clients wishing tahr, chamois, and sika trophies will have to fly between islands to achieve all of them.
